History of the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Team by Art Gib

The St. Louis Cardinals are a baseball team that has won more World Series Championships that other National League team. They have won ten World Series altogether. Most of this team's success came prior to the coast-to-coast expansion of baseball in the late eighteen hundreds and the early nineteen hundreds.

This team has had four names over the course of their evolution as a baseball team. They were first the St. Louis Brown Stockings in 1882 in the American Association of Baseball. They were then the St. Louis Browns from 1883 to 1889. A year later, in 1899, they changed their name again to St. Louis Perfectos.

Finally, in 1900, they became the St. Louis Cardinals and have maintained that name since then. The St. Louis Cardinals have a large and loyal fan base and the people from St. Louis are proud to have them as representatives of the St. Louis sporting division.

The St. Louis Cardinals won their first World Series Championship in 1926 by defeating the New York Yankees. They did not start winning World Series' again until the 1930s. They earned back-to-back pennants in 1930 and 1931. They played the Philadelphia Athletics in the 1930 World Series, but lost. However, they came back the very next year to claim the Series.

By 1934, the Cardinals had gained the nickname, Gashouse Gang. This was mostly due to their rough appearances and rough tactics. In 1934, they won the World Series again by defeating the Detroit Tigers. After this win, however, they did not win another World Series until 1942. During the Second World War, the Cardinals were dominating the game of baseball. They won again in 1944 over their hometown rivals, the St. Louis Browns. They won two years later in 1946 over the Brooklyn Dodgers. Unfortunately, after these wins during the war, they did not win another championship until the 1960s.

In 1964, they defeated the New York Yankees once again to claim the championship. The defeated the Red Sox in 1967, giving them their eighth World Series victory. The next championship would be won in 1982. Only two years ago, they won their tenth world series in 2006. Their best season by record was in 1942, with an outstanding winning percentage.

Their worse season was early in their careers in 1897. The most consecutive wins they have had in a season is fifteen and they accomplished this through 1939 to 1953.
